In 2018 I took part in an innovative design competition hosted by the company NCR. I was challenged to design a product or service, in keeping with their brand, to be implemented in the near future. after significant idea generation and communication with the company, I chose to work on improving the inflight ordering system for commercial airlines.
My solution is essentially a touchscreen device that is fitted to the back of each seat onboard the aeroplane. Passengers would be able to select items from the in-flight menu using this touch screen and subsequently pay for them by card on the machine itself. The cabin crew would see these orders appear on a screen of their own. They would then prepare the required items and take them to the corresponding seat.
If implemented this concept would not only improve passenger’s experiences but also increase the efficiency of the cabin crew’s jobs. Furthermore, inflight revenue made by airlines would dramatically increase as this new system is a far more effective way to capitalise on the captive customers aboard the flight. I reached the final round of this competition, giving me the opportunity to present my design to a board of engineers and designers.
