Urban farming removes the need to transport produce to cities, saving large amounts of energy and environmental damage. This combined with Aeroponic technology (an economically viable and environmentally beneficial alternative to traditional farming methods) could be the future of farming.

Large abandoned spaces, like the Botanic Garden’s railway, provide the perfect setting for farms like these. A farm here would not only benefit local markets but would also revitalise a dilapidated part of an otherwise beautiful area.

Whilst the produce grown in his farm could be used to supply any store or be sold directly to customers, my research points towards a more beneficial option. Acting as an independent retailer, or supplying to large retailers, undermines smaller businesses. Therefore, by instead supplying smaller stores (exclusively and at a reduced price), they are given a helping hand in competing against supermarket chains.
